Admissions

  1. Pupils will be admitted at age 11 into Year 7. The total number of intended admissions into Year 7 commencing September 2009 will be 240. This number includes pupils who will require our specialist provisions for Physical Disability, Dyslexia and Visual Impairment; these pupils would have Statements of Special Education Needs. Kent LEA purchase places in the specialist provision according to need in the South Kent Area.

  2. The 240 places available in Year 7 will be offered without reference to ability or aptitude. In the event of over subscription for admission to these places, the following criteria are used in the order given here to decide which students should be offered a place –

    1. children in local authority care;

    2. where the student has a brother or sister currently attending the school;

    3. physically disabled, visually impaired and dyslexic students up to the capacity of the provision;

    4. nearness of children’s homes and ease of access to schools – we use data provided by KCC which uses a straight line to the school. Priority may be given to some children living further away, if the school is the nearest, over children who live nearer but have access to other schools.

  3. Students are able to join the school in Year 12 for Sixth Form Studies. Students in Year 11 at Pent Valley School have priority over those seeking to join the sixth form. No more than 150 will be admitted to post 16 study in each of years 12 and 13. In the event of over subscription the criteria to be applied will be those in paragraph 2 above.

  4. For other applications for admission to the school such as;
    1. late applications to Year 7

    2. applications to Years 7 to 14

    3. applications to any year after the beginning of the school year

Places will be offered, if they are available, to applicants according to the criteria in paragraph 2 above. Preference will be given to pupils moving into the area who do not have a place at another local school.

There will be an independent appeals panel to hear appeals against non-admission. Appeals should be made in writing to the Clerk to the Governors within 3 weeks of the allocation of places. Details of admissions and appeals arrangements will be published each year.

What Happens Now?

All prospective students have the opportunity to visit the school prior to admission. There are two Open Evenings in 2008 - Tuesday 16th September and Thursday 23rd October. Should you wish to visit at any other time, please call the student office to arrange an appointment for a tour of the school. (Tel: 01303 271908)

Once your child has been offered and you have accepted a place at Pent Valley Technology College, the Assistant Headteacher (Every Child Matters) will visit his/her primary school to speak to your child and the Year 6 class teacher. This is part of our induction programme which has been put in place to ease the transition from Primary to Secondary education.

All children in Year 6, joining Pent Valley Technology College will be invited into the school on 9th July 2009 for a day of taster lessons, to meet the other children and to get to know some of the staff. On the evening of the 9th July, parents and children will be invited into the school to meet with the Headteacher other staff, both teaching and non teaching who will support your child through the years of compulsory education. Some children will be offered an additional programme of visits in June/July 2009, if the Year 6 class teacher at Primary School feels that this is necessary or would be beneficial to your child.

If your child has additional educational needs, is particularly nervous about the transition to secondary school, is coming from a very small primary school or simply just wants to get to know the school a bit better and make some friends.
